Yorkshire Coble Coble fishing boat from NE

The coble is an open traditional fishing boat with a lug sail which developed on the NE coast of England. Its flat bottom allowed use from shallow sandy beaches. Fishermen required high bows to sail in the dangerous North Sea and in particular to launch into the surf and to land on the beaches. The design contains relics of Norse influence.

This watercolour painting became well known after it was featured as the June picture in the RNLI calendar called Nigel Reed`s Working Boats
